Falls Prevention in Cornwall Homes: Adapting to Uneven Floors, Flagstones & Steps

Cornwall's picturesque cottages, historic homes, and rural properties often come with charm—and hazards. Flagstone floors, steep narrow stairs, uneven thresholds, slippery slate in damp weather, and garden paths with roots or gravel make falls a real risk for older adults. As a Mid Cornwall physiotherapist, I've supported many clients after trips on these surfaces, and prevention is far better than recovery.
Cornwall Council and NHS Kernow highlight falls as a major issue for over-65s here. The free "Steady On Your Feet" platform (cornwall.steadyonyourfeet.org) offers self-assessments and action plans, while iCareiMove's "Move More" 25-week programme provides community classes in areas like Truro and Penzance.
Common Cornwall-Specific Risks
Uneven flagstones or worn steps in older homes (pre-1940s builds common).
Damp/mossy paths after rain.
Narrow stairs without handrails.
Clutter from rural living (boots, tools, pet items).
Low lighting in evenings.
One client in a Truro cottage tripped on a raised threshold—simple adaptations prevented repeats.
Step-by-Step Home Adaptations
Clear Pathways & Remove Hazards Tidy wires, shoes, bags from floors/stairs. Secure or remove loose rugs (use non-slip backing). Fix uneven flagstones or add bright tape to thresholds/steps for visibility.
Improve Lighting Add motion-sensor nightlights in hallways, bathrooms, bedrooms (£10–20 each). Use brighter bulbs (LED 800+ lumens) in key areas.
Stair & Step Safety Install sturdy handrails on both sides of stairs (extend 300mm beyond top/bottom step). Add non-slip treads/strips to outdoor steps. For steep cottage stairs, consider a stairlift quote.
Bathroom & Kitchen Grab rails by toilet/shower (vertical/horizontal). Non-slip mats in wet areas. Raised toilet seat if needed. Use long-handled reachers to avoid stepping on stools.
Outdoor Areas Clear moss from paths; add handrails to garden steps. Level gravel with compacted surfaces or switch to firm paths. Slippery paving slabs are common slip hazards in Cornwall, getting these pressure washed regular can prevent any unwanted falls and slips.
Strength & Balance Exercises to Build Confidence - any balance exercise should be prescribed by a physiotherapist and done somewhere safe with good support, such as a kitchen work top in front. Below are some exercises we sometimes use when supporting clients.
Sit-to-Stand: Rise from chair without arms (hold 3 sec), sit slowly. 10 reps × 3 sets.
Heel-Toe Stand: Stand feet together, eyes open (hold 10–30 sec). Progress to eyes closed. 3 reps.
Single-Leg Balance: Hold chair, stand on one leg 10–30 sec. 3 reps per side.
Step-Ups: Use bottom stair with rail—step up/down slowly. 8–10 reps per leg.
